The violent windstorm that swept through San Francisco on that late summer day delivered no rain. Instead, it left dozens of fallen trees, a few million dollars worth of damage - and at least one fatality. A female tourist had just been found in Golden Gate Park, her head apparently smashed in by a wind-blown branch.
The wind was just dying down as Adrian Monk inspected the body. It had fallen onto a boulder, its head dangling over the edge. The deadly tree branch lay on the ground beside her, a few inches away from the round droplets of blood that had fallen from her crushed skull.
"Her name was Beverly Santos," said Lieutenant Disher as he checked his notes. "Vacationing here from Summit, New Jersey. Her husband says she left the hotel for a walk and never came back."
The husband was there on the scene, along with another tourist, a friend from New Jersey, Ginger Hanover. Both seemed to be in shock.
"This was our big vacation," Ginger said. She spoke in a hush, barely audible. "Beverly and I worked together. I always wanted to see San Francisco. I talked her and Grover into this trip. It's all my fault."
"No, it's my fault," said Grover Santos. "We had a fight in the hotel room. Beverly ran out. The wind was picking up. I knew it was going to get worse; the TV said so. I should have stopped her."
"No, it's my fault," Ginger insisted. "You were fighting about me, weren't you?" The petite blonde gazed over at the police lieutenant. "I might as well be honest. This morning Beverly caught Grover giving me a hug. It was all perfectly innocent. I broke up with my fiancé last week and I need a lot of comforting."
"No, it's my fault," said Grover. "I shouldn't have let her go out alone."
Lieutenant Disher said, "It's no one's fault," and tried to look sympathetic.
"No, I think it is someone's fault," Monk contradicted him. "In fact, it's murder. And I have a pretty good idea who did it."
haha...solve this mystery ...very easy !
